A variety of factors shape a company’s compensation philosophy. Preserving internal equity is one example. Do you want to offer everyone the same incentive program and differentiate only on base salary? Or do you want to tailor target bonuses and LTI incentives based on the market data for each particular role? It’s a philosophical discussion for the committee rather than a hard science and both philosophies have merit.
